I am a senior in college and shy also, so when i talk they sometime just look at me cause i'm the quiet person that doesn't talk (lol). The thing I found easiest is to just start talking. The more you do it, the easier it will come. When I took art theory i didn't say much at first, but by the end of the course I was one of the most contributive students for debates. Once you get over the uncertainty with people communication should be better. So just start making small talk; most friendships don't start with elaborate conversations. And if you open up, it will make the other people more likely to talk to you and help break down the shy guy image and remember that even if you do start talking to them it doesn't mean you'll connect. If that happens, don't worry--some personalities don't mix well and some people can be mean i hope this helps a bit. goodluck
