A reader, anonymous, writes (1 December 2008):

Well, I'm a fifteen year-old girl and I know how it's hard to just "approach" someone as it can be awkward. It doesn't matter what age, gender, or what, everyone likes compliments. I don't mean for you to make one up, but if you give her an honest compliment she will appreciate it. You could say:

"Hey, your shirt is awesome."

Plus, what's the worst she can do? It's an automatic reaction to say "thanks." Right there you have her attention. Just take it from there and talk about casual things. No need to get too personal right away.

I hope this helps you and good luck!
