 maybw throw in something about his girlfriend jokingly... like oh! you should get this for your girlfriend or something along those lines. anything else puts pressure on him.

when you have a conversation just drop in "so are you seeing anyone at the moment" you will probably get an answer. but remember just because he is not seeing anyone special, does not mean that he is not dating.
