Hey Joey!
First of all, good luck with your aspirations at wanting to become a doctor.
So, I'm guessing University means undergraduate school here in the US - so you will need to go to University and take mainly physical science course. Lots of math. Then there are the other courses you would take that are mainly dependent on the school you attend. Pass your classes with high scores and you're on your way. Here in the US you need to take a test called the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) which schools use to help determine admission into the school.
You will need to apply to Medical school. So here in the US, you apply to medical school and if they like what they see on paper (the application) they will call you up for an interview - kind of like a job. After the interview you then wait to hear from the Medical school if you were accepted or not.
Medical school here in the US costs about and average of $25,000 per year. This excludes the living expenses (as you probably won't be able to actually have a job since you'll be doing so much studying and spending time in clinical settings), books, meals, etc. So the actual costs of medical school per calendar can skyrocket to as much as $35,000/yr - depending on your personal living expense needs.
If you successfully complete medical school and pass the your board examination test - you are then "matched" to a hospital or "resident" program. Intern/residency programs vary in length of time but usually are another 3-4yrs. Specialties are longer. The intern/residency programs are paid positions, although you don't make much money during the program. Complete your residency and you can either opt to stay at a hospital as a hospitalist or attending physician or move on to a doctor's office - OR start one of your own! The choice is yours after that.
Again, good luck! Study hard and party light. Medical school is no joke!
Hope this helps.
