So I've had on and off bad acne...since you're male taking birth control is obviously not a choice--as there is a certain that has helped me. However, topically the only things that have worked for me are cleaners and a type of toner that contain salycilic acid and glycolic acid.
I've tried it all, Dove, Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, Tea Tree Oil, Benzoil Peroxide and ProActive and none of it's worked. I'm not sure if you can still order it online since you're in the UK and the only stores are in the US, but the best thing that's worked for me is the system from Bath & Body Works by Wexler. It's a facial scrub, glycolic peel pads, anti-aging acne serum, and moisturizer with sunscreen. By far the best I've ever used and they're worth the price. Here's the website for it: http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3704838&cp=3161132.3601878

Also, acne can cause darkening of the skin when your skin is exposed to sunlight, so you get a patchy looking skin, the sunscreen helps avoid this skin darkening.

Just wanted to clarify on moisturizing.
If you have really oily skin, it is not necessary for you to use a moisturizer if you use these gentle cleansers that we are recommending as they don't really strip your skin of all oil.
If you do want to use a moisturizer with sunsreen that is a smart thing to do, one to avoid sun damage to your skin which is cumulative, the early you start wearing sunscreen the less skin damage you will have as you age.
The very best sunscreens contain zinc oxide and you should use at least an spf30 sunblock. Look on the label for it to say noncomedogenic, which means it will not clog your pores and make your acne worse.
Avoid moisturizers containing mineral oil and lanolin, lanolin irritates the skin and inflammation is part of what causes acne to flair up. Mineral oil is just more oil your skin does not need.
Good moisturizers for your body and face are Curel lotion or Moisturel. I believe Neutrogena makes a fair sunscreen and so does Johnson and Johnson with their Aveeno brand, one of the best can be purchased at Dermatologists office, if is Skinceuticals SPF 30 and it is one of the few that contain zinc oxide. Zinc Oxide is the best sunscreen out there it blocks all harmful rays and stays on the skin well....but since in pure form it is white and hard to rub in, it is not combined with other suncreens to get a good effect.
Do not rub your skin hard if you use and exfoliator, but it is fine to use one about once a week.
Good luck.

It is always good to consult a dermatologist about your acne, there are some prescription medicines that can really help.
If you want to try over the counter remedies, here are my suggestions.
Acne is caused by overproduction of oil or sebum in the skin and clogged hair follicles. Your teen years and young adult years and changing hormones also can be an aggravation, but some people like myself have had adult acne for years and need antibiotics to control the bacteria that results from the clogged hair follicles that cause a pimple.
Never pick or squeeze pimples as this forces some of the bacteria back into the skin making matters worse and can cause scarring, sometimes acne will leave scars regardless, and if you have cystic acne, the large hard cysts under your skin, you definately need to see a dermatologist for that.
Wash your face morning and night and after sweating from excercise with a mild soap and do not scrub, Soaps that I recommend are Purpose, Neutrogena Acne Wash, or I love Aveno Foaming Face wash with 2% Salycilic Acid.
Ingredients to look for in products are either or Salicylic Acid 2% or Benzoyl Peroxide 2%. Stridex Pads the regular variety have this ingredient in it and you can use this after washing once or twice a day to remove excess oil and dirt and dry up existing pimples.
If you have existing pimples the best thing to do is to use Benzyol Peroxide lotion on them, just dot it on the pimples and it will help heal them and dry them out.
Diet does not really have anything to do with acne, however, taking care of your health does help. You should really eat regular meals and try not to skip any as this puts stress on your system which causes your hormones to aggravate your acne. So eat a good healthy breakfast lunch and dinner.
Do not use overly hot water to wash your face and never scrub your face hard as this just makes matters worse.
Question 2
Sorry can't help you out with the hat problem except to say that when you wear a cap around your forhead you are going to sweat there and dust and dirt and skin oils will collect on the cap and probably just show as dirt on your forehead
