A female reader, anonymous, writes (9 December 2009):

Hiya. Yes there is a risk to you as a man. You can catch HIV from unprotected oral sex because you are exposed to potentially infected vaginal fluid in just the same way as you would be if you had unprotected vaginal sex with a HIV sufferer. With infected women, performing it on them during menstruation carries an even greater. Any sores in your mouth such as mouth ulcers, a sore throat ect will increase the risk of you contracting HIV. Thinking you can use a mouth wash and brush your teeth after youve performed oral sex doesnt work because you can actually remove the bacteria that just might have afforded a degree of protection.

Unprotected oral sex is a very bad idea as you will risk contracting HIV. There are protective methods you can use, such as a condom over your tongue. Or soft plastic wrap, the stuff you use for wrapping sandwiches, place it over her genital area. But the bottom line is, dont come into direct contact with any bodily fluid.

If you give her oral there is a possibility of contracting HIV if you have any sort of cut or wound in your mouth. Any sort of transmission of bodily fluids that can possibily get into your bloodstream puts you at risk.
