I have a 20 month old son. He never took to a cot and sleeps with us in an extra bed next to ours with a side panel on the bed to prevent him rolling out. As for potty training, I have a potty in the bathroom next to the main toilet and I let him come in to watch 'what you do on the toilet'. I think there should be no pressure - I have him sat on his potty but he is not ready for training yet as such. I think after 2 years they start getting awareness for what is going on in the potty/ nappy dept. which is a good time to think about starting. I would say you should take the lead from your children as they will let you know when they start being interested. I may bypass the potty and start mine on a training seat as he likes flushing the toilet and doesn't seem scared of it at all.

Being the proud father of twins (boy and girl) myself, (plus an older boy!), I can advise that the best time to start potty training is from when they start to sit up unaided. Also, you'll notice that potties have a higher edge at one side(where the hand grip is). Have this high edge at the front for the boy, as boys tend to pee in a high arc. This will shield it from going over the floor!
As far as I can recall, mine were put into beds around the age of 2 1/2.
Best of luck!
