By certain things, I mean in equality of the genders. He has been saying things that disturb me lately, but I don't know if what he has been saying is a matter of his opinion, or if these things are truly fact. I don't even know why we argue about them, seeing as how neither of us were there during those times that these things happened. He says 1) Men rule the world, and he acts like 2) Great feminists like Susan B. Anthony and Gloria Steinem didn't accomplish much, but that the white man felt sorry for them, and let them have rights. (He thinks this about black people as well.)I took U.S. history in high school, so I may need a refresher course, BUT what do you think? Are these just his opinions, or are these things actually so? None of those are facts, only opinions, and uninformed ones at that.
There is a great book called "Don't Know Much About History: Everything You Needed to Know about American History but Never Learned" by Kenneth C. Davis that is a great refresher book. It gives you the basics on what really happened. I've read it and thought it was well written with minimal bias, which is all you can ask for in a history book these days.

2. If Susan and Gloria nor every woman had ever stood up there would have never been any change, we would all still be living in those times. Its not like the "white man" suddenly "felt sorry" and "let them" have rights. And I am 100% sure it didn't go as planned the 1st time women got the right to vote.
It sounds like he knows nothing of the how long black people have been fighting for their own rights as well.
Mind you, I am not an american, and I never studied US history. If I am wrong here then I don't mind being corrected, but in a nut shell I would say your bf basis everything on his own opinion, completely ignoring the struggles and fights, deaths and abuse that took place to allow us to live the way we do today. But I guess when a generation is spoiled it is easy to take everything for granted and abuse our freedom buy insulting the past...making those people no different from the people on the past who refused change.
