I think that you should give him some time to get over her because the last thing you want is for him to still have feelings for someone else while going out with you. Just let him know that you are there for him and he will let you know when he is over her. All he needs now is some time and a friend.

 well i wouldent ask him out right away. i would wait for a little while. get to know him. hang out with him. see how things go. then if things go great them start talking to him about.

 Hey, yeah i think its a good idea for you to ask him out, but give him some time because he may not feel like getting with anyone just yet. Why not ask him out for a friendly drink with a couple of friends so he knows your kind of interested and you wont have to worry about anyone gettin in there first either! Hope this helps.
