A female reader, Firefighter's Wife 09 United States +, writes (10 February 2009):

Some pills can alter how often you get your period. There are several brands you can take that you will only have a period every 3 months. However you can still have breakthrough bleeding at any time during the 3 months. The bleeding can be very light to heavier than your normal period. It can take up to or over a year for some to kick in and work as they say.

The shot for most people, myself included, will stop your cycle within 6 months of your first shot. It is given every 3 months and can have side effects. All birth control can have side effects.

Another Thing to try..

My doctor told me that when you are on birth control and you have a period, its not really your period. Yes you bleed but since your body is not releasing an egg its not a necessary function. If you are taking a pill that has 3 weeks of active pills and 1 week of non active or placebos, you don't have to take the last week! Its just there to remind you to keep taking your pull on time. You can however start with week 1 and when you get to week 4 instead of taking the placebos, start your next pack of pills and you should skip your period all together! Its a great piece of advice if your period is supposed to hit on a big night or while on vacation. Just make sure you keep taking only the active pill at the right time everyday and don't skip one!

If it makes you feel more comfortable, every few months you can stop the pills for a week and get your 'period'. If not just keep on going!

That was all told to me by my doc! But do not take my advice alone. Consult your doctor and discuss all the different options. Nowadays there are so many! Some might work for you and others won't. You just have to try a few to see what you are comfortable with!

Webmd.com has tons of info! Just type birth control into the search bar!

Good luck!
