writes:This is a question about the birth control pill. I usually take my pill between 10 and 11 pm, but I go to parties almost every weekend, get drunk, and forget to take it until 5 or 6 am. These are often nights that I have sex as well. How much does this decrease the effectiveness of the pill?

 If you're drinking so much that you're forgetting to be responsible for your future and health, you should stop drinking, period. It's obviously putting you at risk, alcohol is not worth getting pregnant over.

 you should be fine but maybe switch your pill taking time in general.... my stepdaughter used to take hers when she got home from school... it was the same time every day and she set an alarm on her phone to remind her.

 First off, the pill effects in advance, not on that particular day. If you forget to take your pill one day that doesn't mean THAT DAY you are unprotected, it means the next 7 days you will be unprotected (if you start eating you pills again regularly that is). It takes around 7 days to get protected from the pill as well it doesn't start working on day one unless you take it on the first day of your period.
So you having sex on the particular day you take your pills later is of no relevance. What matters more is if you have sex the following week.
However, taking you pill later in the day does not affect the effectiveness of it. As long as you take it within 12 hours later than you should have, it'll be ok. However you are stretching it a bit, and one day you might be just a little too late with it or forget about it. Be careful.
Just read the leaflet that comes with your pills, it's all in there! In my leaflet it specifically says what to do if I forget my pills at every possible scenario. So read it!
