Does asking someone out too soon damage things permanently if they don't accept?

A male United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

If you ask someone who you like out too soon and don't accept, does that always damage the prospects of anything in the future?

In my case, it was a really hard choice to ask her. She never actually refused, she just never replied to the email I sent her.

Anyway, I had been getting strong feeling that she might like me, and her last email to me did seem written in a way that seemed to hint maybe there was something, though I might be overanalysing?
