Does anal sex cause long term harm?

Question - (24 June 2006) 2 Answers - (Newest, 21 August 2006)
A female , anonymous writes:

My boyfriend always wants to have anal sex and after 3 years I was really in the mood and decided to let him try it. I enjoyed it a bit but not as much as he did. When I am really aroused I do want it. Now he always wants it but it scares me because I heard that this causes health issues in the long run. Is this true and if it is, is there a safe way to do it? Thanks

i have to say i have just learnt first hand the disadvantage to anal sex. i really enjoy it that way but dont do it all the time. a few nights before i did it with my my longterm boyfriend and now i have...piles. very sore and embarrassing.i have had two kids and never suffered with piles. it has turned my boyfriend off doing it again because he doesnt want to do things that will hurt me. i however would do it again but not get too carried away while doing it. i suggest to people to do it if you enjoy it but not too often or vigorous.

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (24 June 2006):

DrPsych agony auntThere are increased health risks associated with anal sex - 'not glamorous' one's like an increased risk of haemorrhoids (piles) and faecal incontinence because of sphincter problems (the tightness of the muscle preventing leakage wears down over the years for some people). The other risk is bacteria transfer - just remember that the bugs up your bottom are good for your bottom but mean't to stay there...if you have vaginal intercourse after anal intercourse then it can cause a transfer of bacteria (that is why us ladies are taught to wipe away after using the loo). If your man doesn't take it easy there is also a risk of abrasions in and around your bottom, particularly when you are new to anal sex which can be mighty sore!

One way couples get around the bacteria thing is to use a condom with anal sex. I am not saying anal sex is ALWAYS bad...it is a personal preference and if you are not comfortable with it then don't do it.
