Does a "read receipt" mean that my friend has definitely viewed my e-card?

A female United Kingdom age , anonymous writes:

I have sent electronic cards to a friend of mine whom I recently split up with jsut asw an apolgy for my part. It says the card has been viewed by him so does this definitely mean it has been viewed because if he had changed his e mail address surely it wouldnt have got delivered or if it had gone in the trash can it wouldnt have said it had been viewed?

Please can someone tell me if this is the case because I so much want him to read it - even if he doesnt respond. It defintely comes back on my e mail from the automatic system - with he has viewed it? So has he or whoever is at the machine at the time?

thanks

A female reader, anonymous, writes (6 July 2008):

I would think he viewed it if that's what it says. He would have had to open the ecard, and once opened, then perhaps it notifies you that it was viewed. I am sure that's all it was. Same thing on myspace when you send a message. When the recipient opens the message it automatically says "read." I would trust it.
