A female United Kingdom age 36-40, *oah writes:

Ok, so earlier today a friend and I got together at my place for our routine coffee talk. We discuss everything and anything, today's topic somehow became masturbation. At this point in time we are both currently single. My friend (let's call him Trevor) being a male and me being female. We somehow seem to have difference of opinions when it comes to this topic, but personally dont consider it a gender related issue.

He claims that routine masturbation is a great thing (I don't disagree). Trevor, a single man in his early 30's says that he personally does the deed up to three times a day (without fail) and sees this as completely normal, regardless if he happens to be in a relationship or not. Now, When he told me of this I nearly fell out of my damn chair! To me personally, single or not, three times a day seems rather excessive.

We then began to discuss how modern society views this, and if most people deem routine masturbation acceptable or not. Between the two of us we couldn't come to a proper conclusion, so please feel free to add your two cents!

So:

How much is too much? And furthermore do you believe that "single" people are more inclined to mastubate on a frequent level or vice versa with those in relationships? And lastly, do you personally believe that a high sex drive, gender, age, upbringing and so on play a role?

A male reader, Sandman United States +, writes (29 August 2007):

Sandman agony auntFor some, there is no such thing as too much. However, there is a such thing as pain - for men especially. I once did the deed for three hours straight and my penis was sore (to say the least). I've never done it more than twice per day, single or in a relationship. I still have the same habits when in a relationship as I do when I'm not in one. So I guess my opinion would be that it probably doesn't matter if you're in a relationship or not, you're still gonna find time to take care of yourself.

And let's not forget that masturbation is selfish, and we sometimes enjoy being a little selfish. Sometimes you just wanna "get off" without worrying about the other person and getting them off too. So masturbation is good in that sense.

I don't know if any of those things you listed play a role in masturbation. I think my sex drive is quite normal but I haven't tugged the pug in two weeks now. Don't know why, just haven't had the desire to do it I guess. Hmmm...

Hope this helps.
