reader, anonymous, writes (16 May 2013): Sometimes women joke about how there is no such thing as a mature man. But if you think about it, that means they are not defining maturity in a gender-neutral way.
Our culture calls it mature to be able to pass for an adult, mingle with adults, do well in your career and education, etc. Those are all things that are much easier for young women to do than young men.
What if our culture measured maturity by your physical bravery, your ability to succeed at making tools & technology, and how well you avoid getting into relationships with people who treat you badly? One could argue that those are signs of maturity just as much as the things our culture favors. How well would young women measure up to young men in that environment?
