I think, if we were to generalise, this would be true. "generally" girls are more ashamed of how many people they have slept with, whereas guys feel more manly to have a higher number. In my reality at least, I don't know many, if any (thinking about it) men, or women, who fit in to that stereotypical view.
I could understand younger teenagers lying about how many people they have slept with, but once you get in to your 20's and above, I would imagine most people are mature enough to be honest about such things.

 Yes. Men tend to lie and say they have had more sexual partners than they really have. Women tend to do the opposite and pretend they have had less.
You can tell if someone is lying about it the same way you can tell if someone is lying about anything: if they won't look you in the eye and say it, if they touch their face when saying it, if their story keeps changing slightly, and so on. Usually your intuition is a good guide to whether someone is lying or not, you can just feel it.

 People lie about all kinds of things and to be honest, it is the most boring conversation when people drone on about how much so called sex they have, who cares?!!! Friend, sometimes its obvious when people lie, they come up with figures ranging from 10 times a night to infinity and you know its all al load of cack really. Thats my opinion!!! xXx

reader, anonymous, writes (31 October 2006): as you get older you do not lie about that because you have more than likely learned a lesson in previous years. a fair few will lie but the majority wont. signs probably include cockyness and gloating about it. this mainly means they have had that much sex but they want people to think they have to make them look good but it doesn't work.

 Yeah i am afraid some people do. well in some cases u cant really tell that is why it is advisable to use protection during sex to avoid STDs
