I think it's ridiculous that teens are expected to know what they want to do with the rest of thier lives! You don't have the life or work experience to know what you want! I'm 29 and I don't think I know really anyone who has a career in what they went to school for (I sure don't! spend $40,000 on a peice of paper I don't even use.

I would suggest taking some time off, work, travel, take some time for you. Then if you want go to school. If that's not an option then focus on courses that you like (if you like sciences get a general science degree). Try to keep it general so you can move around if you want. If you take something too specific then you are stuck with something you can't use if you don't like it.

Good luck

Honeypie agony auntNo you don't, but it is a good idea to take some time and think what you MIGHT want to work with.

I'm 41 and I still don't know what I want to be when I "grow up". I'm going back to school and taking graphic design. I also have a degree in marketing, in economic, I'm a trained book keeper. I have worked in many different fields, hated some, loved others.

I DO believe it's better to have a passion for what you do. It makes those pesky 40-60 hour work weeks more enjoyable. :)

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (14 July 2010):

chigirl agony auntIt is nice to have made up your mind at an early age, because then you have a goal to work towards. Some educations take many many years. And then again, some careers aren't profitable (or at least not the first years), and are only fit for the dedicated.

However most young people have not made up their mind at 15. Most just go with what they feel like they want to do at the moment, and then later in college flip their course of study/get a second degree in something else. Some again don't go to college at all until they are older (although many adults wait with going to college because they can't afford it).

What you should figure out now is some guidelines for yourself. If you find it hard to choose between careers, why not focus on other needs you have? What is most important to you: a stable job with a decent income, to follow you dreams, earning most money possible, or just having enough to get by?

Job options usually present themselves as you go along with life, and you should definitely expect to not get your dream job right away, no matter what choice you make for your studies. Working all kinds of different low-end jobs will do you good to gain work experience, and also to figure out what you really want to do.

If you want to start college now, but not sure about career choice, and don't want to leave home, check out what education you can get that is local, and go with the one you find most interesting.
