I don't think there is a hard and fast rule that they have to...
Some may come back and try and make a go of it... some may see you as a reminder of bad times and want to move on... some may see you as weak enough to put up with them when they fancy just a little nip of something so use you as a soft option.
Everyone is different.
What you should be asking yourself is if you WANT them back? and if you do, is it really the best thing for you? Could you forgive, could you guarantee to be strong enough to kick them in to touch if they start drinking again?
Is it really healthy for you and yours to have them around?
