Could it be pregnancy???

A female Spain age 30-35, *oph.p writes:

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be rather than telling me to go to a doctor, or if anyone else has experienced this:

I had sex around 8 weeks ago so I don't think I'm pregnant and, what I think has been my period has come twice during that time, at the time it was meant to, but now my breasts have become really sore around the outside and slightly underneath as well as the nipples and this has never happened before. My period is due in a few weeks so is it to do with that or could it be pregnancy? Only because I thought they would have started growing earlier on in the pregnancy rather than later?

Thankyou so much, I did take a pregnancy test two weeks after having sex but it said it was negative then the week after I got a gooey, brown liquid at the same time as when my period was suppost to be.

b.rye agony auntSometimes your period can be irregular at times (It's not always an age thing - I'm almost 30 and it happens to me too). When I start feeling those symptoms coming on a little early though, I just brace myself for a very heavy menstrual flow and that is usually exactly what happens.

I wouldn't be too worried right now - give it a few more weeks because you may just be starting an early period or are going to have a monster of one when you're due to.

If, however, your period doesn't come and you continue to have symptoms (say three weeks from now) do go and get a pregnancy test. Some women will experience a light period or two at the beginning of their first trimester because the hormones have not kicked into full gear yet to stop it.

The only difference is they don't drop an egg from their uterus. I don't mean to freak you out about that possibility (it is a rare one) but keep it in mind.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 April 2009):

It sounds like typical premenstrual symptoms of sore breasts. It changes for some women with every cycle. Sometimes i experience that, sometimes not. When I was pregnant tho, I experienced the same thing, so it occurs in both instances. It doesn't sound like you're pregnant, but take a test just to be sure.

Not to harp on you, but just make sure you're proactive in the future about finding out if you're pregnant as soon as you think it's a possibility (and of course be SO careful to prevent it!) because you will have more options early on.
