A female United States age , *ost8 writes:

My husband recently got a vasectomy. After 90 days, he had to go back to th doctor with a sperm sample for a sperm count.

My question is: If it takes only one sperm to get a woman pregnant, what good is a "low" sperm count? Could I still get pregnant? Also, when he ejaculates, what is it that is coming out of his penis?

A female reader, Dawnie United Kingdom +, writes (2 March 2008):

Dawnie agony auntMy husband had a vasectomy late 2002, within 3 months he was told that he was sterile and so i ceased using birth control. The fluid that comes out of the penis is semen it does not contain sperm as when a vasectomy is performed the tubes are cut or tied. If your husband has been told he has a "low" sperm count after the vasectomy you can still get pregnant, it may just take a little longer for him to be sterile, i think it can take up to 6 months sometimes, but check that with your GP. Until your husband receives a letter saying he is sterile continue with birth control. Hope this helps.

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (2 March 2008):

DoubleM agony auntYes, but of course the chance of fertility is greatly reduced, or almost eliminated if the procedure was successful and done well. His physician should be able to assess the probability.

The vascectomies interrupt the travel of sperm from testicles through the tubes (vas deferens) to the prostate gland, where it mixes with semen and becomes the total ejaculate. The tubes are cut and blocked, therefore the content of ejaculate only includes semen, which is produced primarily by the prostate gland. Sperm still continues to be produced in the testicles, but since it's passage is, or should be, impossible, it is regularly reabsorbed by the body and never utilized.
