Could I be reading too much into this?

Question - (11 May 2010) 1 Answers - (Newest, 12 May 2010)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I have a school ball coming up, and there's this boy that I really like. We were chatting the other day, and he asked who I was going with. I told him that me and my friends were going as a big group, and he said, 'ah, I would ask you but me and my (female) friend arranged to go together just last week. But we should definately dance together.' As we started walking off he said that I was beautiful. Then today, one if my male friends said to me, 'i heard through the grapevine that you don't have a date to the prom,' and asked me to the prom. I told him that I didn't really want to go with anyone in a romantic way or anything, but suggested that we went just as a group of us which was the original plan. I asked him who had told him and he said *Sam*, the boy who was going with his friend.

I'm so confused. Did *Sam* want to go with me and not wan to let his friend down, or was he just making conversation? And why would he tell my friend I wasn't going with anyone?

Or am I just reading too much into this because I have a bit of a thing for him?

Thank you, guys!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 May 2010):

It's possible that Sam wanted to take you to the prom but you had already made arrangements to go with your friends so he felt rejected and wanted to make you feel jealous. It's also possible that he was telling the truth. In general it's hard to read someone else's mind and the only way to find out is to ask them direct.

Your friend could have heard from someone else that you hadn't a date.

Just go along and enjoy yourself with your friends, and see how things turn out.
