In my opinion, "SebastePistis" provided good insight, notably that being "spiritual" is different than also being "religious." It can be assumed that many religious types, like your antagonist at church claims, are also spiritual, but in my opinion, many of those are really just using religion as their personal pulpit, such as a way to claim that they are "better" than others. Religion is a vehicle for some people to monetary gain, such as TV evangelists. All you need to be spiritual is a copy of the Bible (and reading and understanding it) and a good heart. It's all about being a good person and doing no harm, which even an atheist should do. Being spiritual (a good human being) does not require congregating, clapping, singing, speaking-in-tongues or any such thing. It especially does not require pageantry, costumes, snake-charming, symbolism, chanting are any of that stuff.

I don't feel like I have to be told how to praise him, we're all His children, so why can't I praise him in my own way?
Don't feel that you have to do what people tell you to feel God. I don't hear God either and it frustrates me too, but I can feel Him. You don't have to hear God, just believe in him. People can help you out with things too. I think everyone has their own way of communicating with Him if they are a believer, don't feel that if he's not talking to you that your doing something wrong. I would avoid talking about this issue to people in your church because they can just end up making you more worried.
Don't worry about it really, everythings fine x

ignore what everyone else thinks. everyone has their own ideas and faith. i personally don;t believe in God, but believe in the after life. but you should believe in whatever you want to. no one else should tell you otherwise. just go with what your heart tells you to.

The problem might very well be that you're starting to see the difference between being 'spiritual' and being 'religious'.
It's very likely that you enjoy the social outlet of being at church as well as being a part of the praise band.
I've never heard God when I've prayed, and I've never felt 'filled with the Holy Spirit'. I'm secretly fairly sure that the people who claim that they have are either lying or have deluded themselves.
Be the best person you can be - if you can look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and be happy with who you are, the rest will fall into place.
