A GUM clnic is the same as an STI clinic.
There is a lot of information available online about how to prevent outbreaks, and there are some natural supplements and things that you could take.
I know it seems like the end of the world finding this out, but you may just get 1 or 2 outbreaks and then be absolutely fine for the rest of your life. OK it will still be there, but not causing you any problems whatsoever. It's a shock but it's not that bad, I promise.

you need to get to the STD clinic and see if you have anything else, and they will treat you for the herpes there.

When, or if, you have a breakout you really should take acyclovir. It is an antiviral and will help a lot to make the breakout shorter and less severe. You can apply aloe vera gel to the area to help soothe it and speed up healing.
To avoid a breakout you need to keep yourself fit and healthy, eat well sleep well etc. There are natural supplements you can take like Lysine (you can get it from most health food shops, chemists etc).
You might find that you never have a break out, or only very rarely. Some people have just one breakout. It doesn't go away, but you can be symptomless. You are not dirty.

I'm all for homeopathic treatments. But certain things just won't work the same as treatments that you need a prescription for. I agree with Honeypie, go see a doctor and get whatever you need for outbreaks.
I know it seems like life is over, but after time the outbreaks get less and less worse and can be very "treatable" even if it's not "curable". I don't have them myself, but this is what has been said by others.

You should go see your doctor.
That simple.
