Question - (1 March 2009) 5 Answers - (Newest, 2 March 2009)
A female New Zealand age 41-50, *etina writes:

Hi I noticed something that never happens to me before and I need some help. After I have my period, my pussy really smells terrible. I didn't tell my husband because I'm ashamed of it. I've no idea why and only happens twice now. Once my period is gone then I'll face that terrible smell and that lasts for like a week or so. I take a shower regularly and still trying to figure out why. This never happens to me before. Can someone explain why please?

Tisha-1 agony auntBad smells are a way of our body telling us that we need to see a doctor! You might have a hidden infection that is causing the foul odor. Best to get it checked out. It may be nothing, but then you can ask her (or him) for some safe ways to stay clean.

Do not douche; this is no longer recommended because it has been linked with an increased likelihood of PID (pelvic inflammatory disease). Essentially, douching pushes bacteria INTO the uterus through the cervix and so it is actually a bad idea. Gentle, mild soap on the exterior (your vulva0 is the recommended way of cleansing.

Good luck, hope it turns out fine!

Follow advice given! If it persists I would see a doctor. You may have an infection. I wouldn't get all worked up over it. It is all part of being a woman! Aren't we lucky??????

I think it's all normal. Your body goes through a whole range of hormonal states throughout one period cycle. Most women experience a dryish vagina with a different smell in the few days after a period. Sorry if that's a little graphic. After that, when you are ovulating, you have a thin, clear discharge. Sometimes, a whitish one.

Of course, if the smell is totally unbearable, then you need to get it sorted out at a doctor. I know this is also gross, but sometimes having unprotected sex can change how you smell down there... sorry to say it.

Whatever you do, don't wash with too harsh a soap and NEVER use any douches or stupid washes designed for the purpose. They only do more harm. Wear cotton undies and sleep naked if you can.

And don't call it a bad pussy :) All vadges are lovely in their own way :)
