firstly make sure you have plenty of massage oil or creams warm it up in your hands then from the shoulder use long stroking movement down his back never go over his spine! work down to the base of his back and then back up using the palms of your hands when his skin is warmed up work over the shoulders using your thumbs and also around the shoulder blades you should be able to feel any tension around his shoulder blade (there should be a dip around his shoulder blades where you can get your fingers in) tension nodules are little mounds that if pushed should move this can be quite painful as it is a build up of lactic acid. Just long slow firm strokes should relax him just check that the pressure is on and please stay away from his spine you can work the muscle either side but not the actual spine as this can cause damage.
as a trained professional i do have some favourite movement my favourite is bear walking, he lays down and you stand at his head end put your hands palm down but fingers pointing sideways (so fingers of both hands should face each other) then slide down the back to the very base of his back then press down slightly then walk back up his back with your hands (it sounds strange but it is a lovely movent and the pressure is great)

Try different movements with your palms and fingers, and vary the pressure. Ask him "does this feel good" or tell him to nod if he likes a certain action. Feedback is good!
