Am I really that intolerant?

A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I have been accused by a friend of being "fatphobic". This is something that's really been bothering me. I consider myself a really tolerant person, and usually dont arrive at an opinion unless I have thought it through very thoroughly, so this seems really unfair.

We were talking about Kirstie Alley.I told her that when I see an overweight person, I can't help but think that there must be some problem with them. Not that they are broken, or deficient etc etc, but only that something is not functioning 100% with them.

Either they have a medical reason, or they have emotional issues with food and overeat, or (and I guess you are never supposed to say this) they just have no discipline and eat too much!

Now, for this she nearly bit my head off! I think this is perfectly reasonable. If a person is happy, healthy and psychologically ok, can they really weigh 400 pounds? Is that really such a crazy thing to say?

I get so sick of people pretending that you are still beautiful and everything's fine even if you weigh two or three times what an average person does.

Now I'm not some kind of food nazi who thinks people who eat cake are stupid and that everyone needs to look like Barbie (I'm just average sized myself) so why do people get offended at my opinion? Am I really the only one who thinks this?

ArmyMedic agony auntI understand where you are coming from, in the NHS we have special ambulances to move these obese people to hospital and have stretchers with wings to allow for the extra flab.

There is often no excuse for that, and don't get me started on fat children! I understand that there are certain medical conditions that can cause some weight gain but mostly it is due to laziness and poor education.

Don't feel guilty for singling these people out as they cost the economy almost as much as smokers (most are smokers)

Boonridge McPhalify agony auntalso if you had a phobia of fat people then how would you tolerate that persons company as clearly you would be too nervous and on edge-they are talking rubbish and ignoring their ability to shape their future.

Boonridge McPhalify agony auntno but if you tell fat people they cause it just like smokers with cancer you will find they dont care for that opinion.

just cos people dont want to hear that they shape their relity doesnt detract from the truth of the statement. greed, lack of excercise and no self respect leads to this problem-only a very small amount is due to genetic metaobislm disorders.

most people have bodies designed to use a small amou8nt of food very efficiently in a hunter gatherer lifestyle. if all you do is eat high fat prcessed food while sitting down the average bodyb takes advantage of this time to develop a savings account for a rainy day. misers need to get spending those pounds.

Seems like a decent opionion to me. I can't think of another reason beside the several you stated for why someone would be overweight. You don't point them out every time you see them and state this same thing again do you? Because it seems that if you said this once in a discussion that called for it then there shouldn't be a problem. If you constantly say thigngs about fat people, then that is inappropriate.
