Yes join the Marines. You will travel and gain alot of life experience. Your height shouldnt matter if you are a good guy and treat girls well, you will find one that really appreciates you. Try dating, dont put it off because you are going away in a year. You might have a few relationships before you leave and if you meet the right girl before then, she will wait for you. As for your friends doing drugs. I know what you mean, they drift away once your paths start to divert but thats just how it is. Stay clean and work towards being in really good shape for the Marines. Just to let you know. I knew a guy once and he was 5ft 2. He was fit and worked out regularly. He had the hottest body of any man ive ever seen. And ive seen a few. So work out, stay away from drugs and go see the world next year x

Kenj agony auntYou sound like a decent guy, if joining the marines is what you truly want then go for it.

It will open your eyes and take you to places you never dreamt of.

The only thing with starting a relationship before you leave is you wont have a solid foundation to work on and a potentional girlfriend could get easily bored and seek someone else while you are on your tour of duty plus you may meet someone else yourself while away.

Its different if you had a long term girlfriend before you left because there would be that connection there.

Your still a young guy and have your whole life ahead, building a relationship takes time and effort, I would not go into that if you cant spare the time right away.

Good luck!
