reader, anonymous, writes (15 January 2008): you're from the UK, so i'm gonna put this in (the most random) example i can think of but for some reason its stuck in my head now. The x factor: Simon Cowell repeatedly told Leon Jackson he was the dark horse of the competition and he meant that Leon was turning out to be an unlikely winner and that nobody really expected it from him or knew he had it in him but he was now looking like he was going to win it.
i think your friend meant there is a side to you that people dont know about even if they think they know you and that you keep hidden and dont let people see.

Usually when someone tells you you have a dark side, it means they realize you know how to be naughty and sometimes a little "bad". You don't always follow the rules. You don't always do what you're told. You're a bit of a non-conformist; a rebel if you will. And that's not always bad! But I suspect that's what your friend meant by this comment so take it with grain.
