A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I guess I would start with this:

About a year ago I weighed almost 200 lbs

and now that I am down to 145, I am noticing a lot more about myself. Normally I just noticed the stretch marks and fat that my body had decorated itself with, but now I notice every little thing. This includes scars, stretch marks and these weird little veins on my legs. I have seen them on older people, but I am only 19! They are small, almost like drawn on by a fine tip pen. They are about an inch in length and some are blueish others more purplish. Can anyone tell me the name of them and if there is anything I can do to get rid of them? And what causes them?

It sounds like you probably just have little spider veins. I have a few on my legs too, not a big deal. I don't think there's anything you can really do to get rid of them besides maybe some sort of laser treatment? Otherwise, they're less noticeable if you're tan. If you don't tan or choose not to, then use a self tanner on your legs and they won't show as much.

First of all: congratulations on your weight loss! What you did is a huge accomplishment, so don't treat it lightly. Not many people could do this.

Now, onto your question.

The reason you're noticing it is because your skin is loose. Compare it to a balloon about to blow to a slightly deflated one. It will get better, but your body needs to adjust first and this is a process that will take a while.

As for the veins, I can't remember the exact name for them, (English is not my first language, so I need to think real hard) but they are easily treatable with a laser. Just ask your nearest beauty parlor. They will have an intake, and then they will tell you exactly what you have, how they'll treat it, what results to expect and how much it costs. They will probably ask you to keep out of the sun for 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after the treatment. Treatment itself is painless and short.

PeanutButter agony auntFirst of all, I want to congratulate you on your weight loss. The lines and veins you may be seeing may well be varicose veins - the only way to be sure is to check with your doctor.

There are lazer techniques to aid in treatment of this issue but, again, you can only know for sure your options after referring yourself to a professional.

Once again, congratulations. Seek medical advice if you are at all worried and good luck to you!

xx
