Hard to Read Questions

QZQZ, posted over a year ago

I feel like some of the questions that get posted are very hard to read and understand, and while I'd love to help the person, I think it'd be easier if the post could be understood. Is there some sort of way a mod could possibly re-word a person's question so it makes more sense?

I hear you. You're not the first to point out the problem.

On almost any given day the site has 100 questions published, and some days it's over 150. And that doesn't include questions that were submitted but weren't considered acceptable for publication for whatever reason. That's a whole bunch of stuff to read and evaluate.

Consider, too, that some of the questions are quite long -- they can top a thousand words lots of times. And a mod is only allowed so much time with no activity (i.e. approving a question) before they're automatically logged out. So you can work away fixing spelling and grammar and generally trying to make the question clearer, only to find you can't put it through and your time has been wasted.

That's a long way of saying that it's really the poster's responsibility to make their question comprehensible. The easier it is for folks to read, the better advice they're going to get.

mods cant feasibly rewrite posts. And many poster use an online translator to help them because english isnt there first language. I hear you loud and clear...but its the best we can do sometimes. ;)

Nah. Mods just sit up in their throne room, scratching and grunting, drinking beer and laughing at us. You know they can actually see us, right? They're lazy, mystical beings.. woOoOoO...

Trust me, the mods find some submissions impossible to understand and cannot possibly guess at what the poster meant to say. Others are borderline but seem to need answers and they want to help by putting the answer through.

It's a tricky balance and one made more difficult by simple lack of time. Modding takes a great deal of concentration and time and we simply don't have the luxury of being able to rewrite every question or answer so that it's clear, comprehensible, well-punctuated, with correct grammar and spelling.

And for the record, it's coffee they serve in the mod room. Beer makes us burp.

The cucumber example was very carefully designed following laboratory testing using a double-blinded control group and a placebo.

I guess I'm overly sensative this morning. Sorry.

I really did have the hiccups from beer yesterday :) It was aweful. I have enormous hiccups that make my voice hoarse.

Whoa, lots of replies from when I posted this question. XP I guess I wasn't 100% how the approving system worked, so thanks to everyone who explained it better. (: I guess part of the problem too is that I'm a crazy grammar/spelling nazi so it bothers me when things aren't perfect. .

Glad the explanation helped. Word of warning, if you expect perfection from this site you will definitely go bananas.

Oh, it's fine. I actually didn't expect much of a response. ^-^'' I hardly ever do anything on forums, so I was surprised so many people actually noticed and replied. (It makes me feel kind of special really. X3)
